The Toyota Corolla is the next model to become part of the family of sports cars signed by Toyota Gazoo Racing. The new Toyota GR Corolla will reach 300 hp to position itself as an alternative to compact cars such as the Renault Meganne R.S. and the Hyundai i30 N, among others.

Toyota is determined to tackle the best sports compacts available in Europe. The Japanese manufacturer, through its Toyota Gazoo Racing division, is creating a new and very interesting range of models. Following the unquestionable success of the Toyota GR Yaris, the company has chosen to raise the ante and set its sights on the premium category.

The idea of ​​a Toyota GR Corolla is not something new. Since the current generation of the popular compact hybrid burst onto the scene, there has been speculation about the possibility of getting to see a sporty cut variant. What's more, Toyota itself has made certain winks to its most staunch followers in this regard. The Toyota Corolla GR-Sport is a clear example of this strategy. Now, the time has come to go one step further.

The «big brother» of the Toyota GR Yaris will be a reality

In a short space of time Toyota's bare-bones GR range has started to take shape. What started with the Toyota GR Supra reached a new level with the celebrated GR Yaris. The new Toyota GR 86 will soon follow suit. And, in the near future, the first compact hatchback in this line of sports cars will make an appearance. Namely, the new Toyota GR Corolla.

The new GR Corolla will become the first Toyota Gazoo Racing model to be supported by the GA-C platform, an architecture intended for compact-size vehicles. From far away and exotic Japan, new and interesting information has emerged about this future release. The fact that, due to the segment in which it will be located, added to its relationship between performance and price, it will be positioned as one of the most demanded TGR products stands out.

For the development of the GR Corolla, the five-door body variant of the Toyota Corolla will be taken as the starting point. Various adjustments will be made to modify the exterior design and, likewise, the dynamic behavior. The front and rear fenders will be widened, both bumpers will be redesigned and a relevant rear diffuser will be installed. You will also enjoy a rear spoiler and specifically designed wheels.

As for the mechanical section, under the hood of the GR Corolla there will be a 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine with three cylinders. This is the same block used by the GR Yaris. However, you will have a specific set-up to increase performance. The Japanese manufacturer has set itself the goal of reaching 300 hp. This will allow him to be above some of his most direct rivals.

The gasoline block will be associated with a six-speed manual gearbox and a variable traction system that allows you to enjoy 4x4 traction depending on the chosen operating mode.
